I get it. 
My best friend in college eventually married a French woman and lived with her and twelve cats. Some people can never let a homeless cat stay homeless for long. At least the two of them never had to worry about mouse infestations.

I don't think bats would have been an issue for them, except for the human variety. 
Also, they didn't have a belfry or a nearby tall hollow tree.
My family had an old, hollow apple tree more than sixty years ago. An owl made a nest in the upper branches.
