I'm assuming that the item in the picture once had some kind of useful purpose. Perhaps a spittoon, or a mixing bowl for the pharaoh's daughter, or a home for goldfish in the palace of the Ming emperor.

Actually, it's a cauldron. It was used for ritual purposes. Ownership of these ritual cauldrons denoted power.
In other words, Star Trek fans, this is the Sacred Chalice of Rix that belonged to Lwaxanna Troi.
