I'm assuming that the item in the picture once had some kind of useful purpose. Perhaps a spittoon, or a mixing bowl for the pharaoh's daughter, or a home for goldfish in the palace of the Ming emperor.

Actually, it's a cauldron. It was used for ritual purposes. Ownership of these ritual cauldrons denoted power.

In other words, Star Trek fans, this is the Sacred Chalice of Rix that belonged to Lwaxanna Troi. smiley - winkeye
