Judy Garland's career had many ups and downs. Her 1954 "Star is born" was an attempt at a comeback. Both Garland and James Mason won Golden Globes in 1955, but Oscars were eluded them that year.
Lady Gaga is always watchable, as is Brad Cooper. Even if there are things about the movie that don't thrill you (some of Gaga's early singing, in my opinion), there's never any point at which I don't care about them.
