Video: Eastern European Jewish Communities

A water carrier in the Vilna ghetto.

When we think about the Shoah, too often we only think about the horror, and forget to remember the lives that were lost: the once-thriving communities of eastern Europe that are now gone. I couldn't find public domain footage of those communities, so I put together a slide show with the help of the Library of Congress. From Constantinople to Central Asia to the Balkans and Poland, there was a rich culture that we should remember.

Each man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind.

John Donne
