Non-diegetic? It isn't just musicals that suffer from inserts

Post 1

Lots of nonmusical movies have things inserted, including soundtrack music, voiceovers, occasional sound effects (in a fistfight, when the actors are pretending to hit each other but not really doing so, sound effects are there to make it sound as if they really are hitting each other).

Heck, there are precious few movies that don't have at least a song or two added. You want to see a James Bond movie? Maybe you'll have to hear Adele sing a song. In a sense, the line between musical and nonmusical have been blurred; maybe this is Hollywood's revenge on the public for its loss of interest in the musical mainstay of the 30s and 40s.

I can think of exceptions to insertions -- Ingmar Bergman's
"The Magic Flute" comes to mind. And maybe Mimi's long, live-filmed solo in "Rent" qualifies as well.

I was confused by the casting in "Mamma Mia HWGA." The young Donna looked so much like Sophie that I assumed she *was* Sophie. Silly me! Anyway, this wasn't "Hamlet" or "Faust" or (given the Napoleon angle) "War and peace." Oh, well.
