My youngest sister wrote today to say she loved the Barbie clothes. 
When she was little, our mother made her Barbie clothes (to save money, I think). She was the envy of her circle of friends with her custom-made outfits.

Yes, official Barbie outfits are very expensive... Handmade custom outfits are the best, though, I agree!
