What is it with trees?
Well, to start with, they are far more sociable than we used to realize. In an old-growth forest, the older trees watch over the younger ones, exchanging message and nutrients through adjoining roots. Usually this happens with trees of the same species, but not always. For instance, Birches and Douglas firs can help each other. At some times of year, when he firs are still photosynthesizing but the birches are not, the firs can help the birches. In the Spring, when the birches have just leafed out, they have a sudden burst of sugar, which can flow toward the firs. Maybe. The article I read didn't actually specify which times of year, but I'm guessing that tat's how it works.
