I salute you - your careers enabled you to make a difference indeed, and even now your career enables you to share stories with us, which makes a difference in a different way 
It is interesting 'what if?' that things happen in moments, and what if things had been different, but as you say small differences could make big differences to other people. It might be hard being disabled, or whatever challenges are encountered, (and often is) but the experiences gained as a result are valuable.
