Aw, come on. How would Harry Harryhausen know what was ridiculous? 
I've seen that film at least twice - once with a monk who was a big mythology fan. My favourite bit was Maggie Smith's big marble head...

This 2-headed dog is brought to you by the same guy who brought us a 6-legged octopus. Obviously he hadn't seen the 'Hey Bulldog' section in 'Yellow Submarine'. Perhaps Harryhausen was just trying to take a shortcut, as he only had Bubo, Calibos, Kraken, Medusa, Pegasus, Scorpions and a Vulture to animate.
Sadly Maggie Smith's big marble head was knocked out of the competition in 'Clash of the Argonauts' Round 1…
