Well, I have got to the end of the story as I planned it. And I've only written 39,738 words. 
This is strange, because I thought there was plenty going on in my story. The truth is, if it had been properly written, with decent descriptions of people and places, it would be much longer. This version gallops through events without drawing breath.
I'm not giving up yet, because there are things I can add - a kind of introduction in more recent times, a few scenes in Henri's point of view, and a conclusion to match the introduction. And I've got a few more days to finish!
