The United States of America has lost one of its better writers recently, RIP E L Doctotrow. His looks at and writes about a lot of uncomfortable US history but his lovely prose style makes it all worthwhile. His better known works (because they became movies) include Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, and Billy Bathgate. He also uses magical realism to make his stories very interesting.
