Ankh-Morpork will miss its favourite scribe.
Sir Terry Pratchett, Storyteller Extraordinaire
Sir Terence David John "Terry" Pratchett, OBE (28 April 1948 – 12 March 2015) has passed on. We will miss him.
It's a safe bet most readers and Researchers on h2g2 can remember the first time they picked up one his books. I can't believe I'm reading a fantasy novel. Oh, well. As soon as we get to the Telepathic Kitty, or Princess Whatshername simpers one time too many, I'm outta here.
Then: Wait a minute, this is FUNNY. It even has funny FOOTNOTES. Where have you been all my life, you clever person?
Or similar.
People who (like me) hate fantasy as a rule, love Terry Pratchett. People who like fantasy…also like Terry Pratchett. One of the most likeable writers in the English language. Ever.
Full of insights, too.
The whole of life is just like watching a film. Only it’s as though you always get in ten minutes after the big picture has started, and no-one will tell you the plot, so you have to work it out all yourself from the clues.
from Moving Pictures
Goodness is about what you do. Not who you pray to.
from Snuff
Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry..
from Thief of Time
It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.
from The Last Continent
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it..
from Reaper Man
From these quotes, it is evident that Terry Pratchett thought about life and death. A lot. It is therefore fitting that in this brief tribute we quote the motto from his official coat of arms – being a knight, he was entitled to one, and of course it had to have an ankh and an owl on it. The motto reads, 'Noli timere messorem', or "Do Not Fear the Reaper".
'I meant,' said Ipslore bitterly, 'what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?'
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually. CATS ARE NICE.
from Sourcery
Exit Sir Terry, chuckling. Your cat will miss you, sir, and so will we.
