Thought of you today, I had a brush with Linear Algebra.

I had to lay out a wheel-chair ramp from a set of architectural drawings. He gave me elevations for the top, landing and bottom. When using these numbers the slopes were different, which they shouldn't be.

He also had both runs shown at a 6.7% slope. I seldom use a percentage of slope, I usually use degrees or rise in 12 inches. I decided to check the web to make sure I remembered the formula correctly http://www.archtoolbox.com/measurements/geometry/slope.html

I thought that the example of ramp slope might help you give an additional practical use, but it is up to you.

The one thought I had was that, as sometimes you talk about 1x and other times you use 'x' as a multiplication sign, would you consider using × when you are multiplying to make it easier to distinguish?

I'd like to apologise for my typo I've just spotted, where I wrote 'sometimes you talk about 1x and other times you use 'x' as a multiplication sign'. Of course I meant to write '2x' as at no point in the entry does Sasha say '1x', as of course '1x' would just be 'x'.

No worries - I knew what you meant, and indeed it is sometimes useful to specify that something is indeed 1x, so it is eg also -i &times; i &times; x or whatever
