More fodder for the Create 20th-century challenge. Oh, what a time it was...

The past was actually more interesting than you might think. smiley - winkeye

It is sort of hard to believe that hair-styles could be a cultural battlefield. But then again think about how scared certain Moslem countries are of women walking around unveiled and showing their hair. Who knew that hair was a WMD? It gives new meaning to 'bad hair days'.

In its way, reminescent of the 'long hair' revolution with men is the 1960s, a point on which people were making comparisons at the time, comparing 'the soaring sixties' with 'the roaring twenties'.

During the middle ages there was very little difference in the garb of the Mideast and Europe, the standards of dress having been carried forward from the late Roman era.

Most of the present day differences have evolved since and there has been almost no change with the most conservative of the Islamics from the standards of dress and decorum that obtained during the middle ages.

Thanks, folks. smiley - smiley

I agree - the dress and hair business isn't interesting in and of itself, but for what it shows us about social attitudes.

Hair is such a big part of a person's appearance... I was thinking of the hippy long-hair thing too, and how the long hair, post conscription in particular was a sort of symbol of stuff... I guess skin-heads, simular, and then punk of course... not sure what the current trend is... smiley - alienfrown

Careful, speak of the devil and sometimes he comes.

I personally think its kind of nice not having a mass craze underway.

Amplifies sore thumb effect and makes it easier to pick the real loons out the crowd.smiley - biggrin

Vargas was famous to an illustration a month during the early years of Playboy magazine, among other things.

smiley - laugh I put a footnote giving his complete name, and the fact that he was racier...I didn't want to link to him.

He was the pin-up king. Here is a slideshow for the salacious and lazy:

Don't blame me - I'm just posting this for information. I do not endorse Senor Vargas' choice of subject...

Although Elektra just commented that they appear to be too old for jailbait. She also wishes me to point out that this does not constitute part of my 'extensive collection of pornography' - which Trout Montague has accused me of owning. smiley - whistle

By today's standards, the typical Vargas rates no worse than an 'R' rating, though that might have made him unprintable in most of the popular media by 1920s standards.

Still, like Toulose-Lautrec (most famous for his advertising sergraphs) and Gibson, rates his place in history.
