Gnomon - time to move on

Just change Omega Centauri to omega Centauri. Other than that, I think it is ready to go.

I read this and have a few questions, as I'm very much a novice in relation to Astronomy.

"Antares (alpha Scorpii) literally means 'rival of Mars' and indeed, they appear very similar to us. " - 'they' being Mars and the star look similar in the sky?

The example "there are Latin phrases inherited from the Roman Catholic religion ingrained in everyday English, such as Rest In Peace" looks a bit funny to me, as rest in peace are not Latin words... How about something like ie, or etc?

"The 16-mile peak of Rheasilvia" - sounded a bit funny to me, as Rheasilvia is a crater rather than a mountain.

What's a trans-Neptunian Object?

smiley - ok

smiley - galaxyYes, I've added "with their red colouring." to the end of that sentence.smiley - ok

smiley - modWhat's a trans-Neptunian Object?
smiley - galaxyA rock orbiting the Sun beyond the orbit of Neptune. I've changed that to read: "Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are rocks orbiting the Sun beyond the orbit of Neptune."smiley - ok

Thanks for sorting that out smiley - ok

Sorry I didn't explain my point well in relation to RIP - it looked funny because "Rest in Peace" is not Latin, so it doesn't demonstrate to me how Latin is embedded in English.

I suggested using ie or etc as examples of Latin that is embedded into English (but which sound very confusing out of their context smiley - laughsmiley - blush) but there must be something even better that I can't think of now I'm trying to smiley - erm

I'm not happy with the way you've explained Latin. The use of Latin in England only really became common after the Reformation, I think. I'll try and comr up with some sort of explanation for it.

Gnomon - time to move on

Thanks, GB, for respecting my opinions. smiley - smiley

I'm happy with your references to Latin and the Roman Catholic religion now. It doesn't fully explain the issue, but it's accurate enough to be going on with.

I'd make a few changes to the paragraph on Olympus Mons and Rheasilvia:

used to be the tallest mountain as well -->
used to be considered the tallest mountain as well

The 16-mile height of Rheasilvia -->
The 16-mile-high central mountain of the Rheasilvia crater

Once those two changes are made, I'm happy with this.
