This story is about a serious subject, but I'm hoping you get the giggles somewhere along the line.

the description of events in 1960 is from a first-person account by the main participant.

I haven't done the internal links yet, so if anybody wants to nominate a few, you can save the sub-editor some work.

This is a great story, well told. smiley - smiley

Though I don't know you've proved that Operation Alert was cancelled because of the actions of Mary Sharmat and Janice Smith.smiley - erm

Here in the UK, the Home Office produced a booklet called 'Protect and Survive', which was apparently aimed at encouraging people to think the population of the UK could survive a nuclear war. It was widely ridiculed, particularly by cartoonist Raymond Briggs, in his book 'When the Wind Blows' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Wind_Blows_(comics)

Interesting link, thanks! smiley - smiley

It's true that there was resistance to Operation Alert from various quarters. But it's also true that the NYPD in particular encouraged the government to give it up, when they pointed out how hard it was to police participation. And they were disturbed when respectable people - as opposed to scruffy 'radicals' - started objecting.

I know it's not scientific proof. But it's an encouraging story, which was all I was aiming at.

Just in c ase it sounded like I was giving the ladies ALL the credit, I added two words to the conclusion. It now reads, 'They helped to put an end to a government lie.'

They certainly helped.

If you feel depressed after watching 'When the Wind Blows', take comfort that Jim and his wife have gone to a better place – if you watch 'Father Christmas', you can see them in the Scottish pub.
