I appreciate that you want to keep this article short and sweet but I would still like to see an introductory sentence like that proposed by Gnomon.

These are the typos that I meant:

smiley - biroIn the first line, 'boys who's job' should be 'boys whose job'. The same is true in the description of Fettlers.

smiley - biro In the last sentence of the introductory paragraph, 'brake down' should be 'break down'.

smiley - biro There are some apostrophes missing. I would say 'saggar makers' bottom knocker'.

A few questions I would like to see addressed

Why did the Saggar Maker not knock out his own bottoms? I suspect it was because he was an older worker and it took a strong young man to cleanly knock the clay through the hoop, but that is only a guess.

How many bottoms would be knocked in a single day? Was it done every day, or only when the kiln was being prepared for a firing.

If it was not a full time position, what other duties might they perform?

the bottom knocker was often employed by the saggar maker not by the pottery, his job to make the bottom of the saggar was dull and repetitive and it was necessarry to speed up the process of saggar making since in those days everything would be fired in a saggar a pottery would go through quite a lot of them

smiley - puff I'll get to updating this as soon as I can

Jiggers and jolliers, is this a person or a piece of equipment? The entry makes it sound like a job, but earlier in the thread it sounds more like equipment (or an attachment to equipment).

Would the Fettlers make more sense after the jiggers and jolliers, as they are described as assistants to?

And it would only be Saggar makers' bottom knocker if the bottom knocker worked for several saggar makers. If it is one knocker to one maker, it should be maker's.

Love the length!
