Oh... did the styrophone container, mean that it was some frozen version that had been nucked before entring the fray with the other morsals on the plate?
A quick search on the internets reveals actual* so-called recipes, for 'mushy peas', using frozen peas! My sense of moral outrage and reputgancy has just hit an all-time high, supasing its previous ever-recordered, high point visa reading something regarding chocolate pudding, many years ago I think I'm going to go to the corner of the room, just to have a private little cry...

Point taken on national availability - they may have formerly only been a Midlands and Northern English thing (explaining why only touristy areas of North Wales are familiar with them) but according to the professionals, they've gone exponential and are nationwide now.
http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/fmcg/mushy-peas-go-national-as-tesco-trebles-sales/198170.article
But going national - ie, getting into London and smart trendy surrounding areas - is only a recent phenomena. Might have something to do with Jamie Oliver and other celebrity chefs championing them? (The Delia Effect...)
Might be worth mentioning that the further north you go in England, the more likely it is that your mushy peas will not be green marrowfat, but black peas or black-eyed peas... I was offered these in a chippie in Darwen, Lancashire. They're not bad, but a bit hard.... Mike Harding once did a comedy routine about coming home blitzed with a chip supper, eating it, sitting down, breaking wind and nearly shooting the dog... he also talked about "pebble-dashing the toilet bowl" later...
I love the way Wikipedia refers to "Yorkshire Caviare", and ye gods, I'd forgotten the mushy pea stall in Norwich Market, a mecca for expat Northerners... but it's years since I was at UEA... they're not coloured, though, and come put a field-grey sort of colour. Interesting, if you're used to bright green chippie mushies.

You *can* make a sort of ersatz mushy pea using garden peas and sodium bicarb, but they don't taste quite right... i wonder if some uneducated eateries cut corners this way?
And ye gods, now I know mushy peas are a delicacy for the smart home counties set... Waitrose sell them...
(OK, some bloke called Dhruv Baker puts his name to their recipe, but they do sell Harry ramsden's.)m

I thought that all the were doing things like mushy peas with a slice of black pudding and scallops as an entrée these days?
How about a pronunciation guide? I think that it's "mooshy" peas rather than "mushy" peas?
In Sheffield we add Henderson's Relish to ours, but then that's a very local thing.
And isn't there some tale that does the rounds now and again of an American woman who asked her hosts if they could provide her some of that green caviar she'd had last time she visited? or did I dream that.
And now I'm homesick brilliant entry.
(oh and for the record: I mushy peas AND sauerkraut)

Black pudding and mushry peas (seperate or I guess together), do seem to have suddenly become rather 'fashionable' in certain resturants.... I'm guessing some TV chef or celib chef must have popularised them again (not having a TV and not watching such programs I of course don't have a clue)...
Off out on Tuesday night, to a pub/resturant (which is clearly trying to be more of a resturant than a pub, looking at their pricing for food, adn the menu), and I'll be sampling their mushy peas, as a side dish with the haddock and chips (yeh, they did have a few more fancier main courses which tempted me, but I fancy Haddock, as we don't ahve a suitable fish n chip shop near where I live, who can provide such a thing as fish N chips) Hoping it might be quite decent, and I'll be taking notes on their mushy peas

I'm going to add Sho's comment, about Henderson's Relish, being as we've got an actual entry on this condiment. And I love the myth about the green caviar
And thanks for your review Sho, it's good to see you here!

a namecheck on my first return to PR
looks good to me (and I'd totally forgotten about the Henderson's Relish entry)

{TV chefs often include mushy peas in their repertoire}
Really? I think "often" is pushing it a bit.
{Do not confuse the with the green split pea}
Nope, you confused me there.
{In Sheffield we add Henderson's Relish to ours, but then that's a very local thing. - Sho}
You probably shouldn't name-check people in the text. Researchers (to be blunt) aren't widely known, and in any case, they can change their name at any time.
{The simply cook the second portion}
Then…?

When you're boiling them, a lot of the hulls of the peas will separate and float to the top - would it be worth mentioning whether to skim them off, or just allow them to mush into the final product?
(I skimmed them. There were shedloads of them...)
