You are doing really well, and you're an inspiration to us all. I wish you all the best! Do you mind if I ask what your target weight is?
Well done!

I don't mind you asking! I really should have written something about that already but I forgot
I am trying not to focus too much on a final target at the moment - if only because it seems too far away. I would like to be a size 12 - 14 when I finish this, not looking to be stick-thin because I don't like the look and don't think it is realistic shape for me.
Another reason I haven't set a hard and fast end goal is because the recommendations I have had seem too difficult to achieve - one online dieting site said I should be 9 and a half stone but that doesn't sound achievable, and I don't want to set myself up to fail. A dietician I visited (who was awful - I may write about this too eventually, the shoddy treatment I have had from the medical establishment when I have sought help) said I should be 70 kilos (she didn't understand stones) which is about 11 stone and is roughly where I am aiming.
That is about another 3.5 stone away on the face of it, but is actually a bit nearer than that. I have discovered that our scales at home are not very accurate and consistently weigh me heavier than I actually am by about 7 lb. I will continue to track my weight loss on them, but for the absolute stopping point I'll have to get weighed somewhere else. All that means I have got about another 42 lb to shift
I've got a holiday and christmas to get through yet but I can honestly say that for the first time ever I have actually kept a New Year's resolution
Well done!

Hi Kelli,
May I add my congratulations - losing 4 stone is phenomenal!!!!!, especially in so short a time.
As you probably know, it gets harder to lose weight the further down the line you get. But once you start to make lifestyle changes, you know that it's going to happen eventually. I started going to a gym regularly a few years ago, and now it's a part of my life that I don't want to do without because I enjoy it so much.
One thing I've discovered is that it's not just the cardiovascular exercise that makes a difference. Weight-training, pilates, yoga are also very effective ways to burn off energy - and they make you look good too!
If you haven't tried them yet, I would recommend doing some yoga or pilates. Anything that makes you hold balances or positions, or makes you use your own body weight as resistance is excellent. My own secret weapon is breakdancing, but it's not for everyone. You are far more likely to get injured and you have to like hip-hop!
The other advantage of exercise like this is that it will make you more flexible and improve your posture, so that you will feel more comfortable with your own body. People who walk tall and move with ease just look better.
And you've given up smoking as well, Superwoman! I've yet to do that, sadly. You are without doubt the most un-loser-ish person I've come across on h2g2!

Right, I've added a bit about what my goals are, and links to some of my fellow h2g2 losers.
Gubernatrix, I am proud to be a loser! Thanks for the advice, I think I might skip the breakdancing though I'm still pretty big so balancing on my head seems a bit unfair on my poor old neck
When I hit my first plateau (after about 12 weeks) I had a sulk about it to one of the track-suited demi-gods in the gym. He recommended that I did resistance work as well as the cardiovascular stuff so I have been using the resistance machines ever since. An added bonus is that the muscle tissue that it builds is active tissue, it needs energy all the time even when you are resting so (unlike fat) it actually burns energy and raises your metabolism when you aren't lifting a finger. Hooray!
I have just come back from a weekend at a health spa and amoungst lots of other things I tried pilates for the first time. I enjoyed it, not sure if I was doing it right but it was good. I am going to try to find a class to attend regularly so hopefully I'll get a bit better at the moves with some practise.
Giving up smokings was a piece of compared to this, at least the cravings for a fag receded after a while (still inger when I'm drinking but I can cope with that), the hunger just never stops

Probably not any useful ones!
I just sort of stopped, stopped buying them, stopped nicking them off other people, stopped going for fag breaks at work, stopped smoking at home... It really depends on you - I tend to be all or nothing in my approach to things, if I have one ciggie then I'll have a packet (the same for biscuits ) so it was easier for me to just stop than to try and cut down and down until I didn't want them any more. I had to avoid pubs for a while because I really wanted to smoke there. Also, I ate a lot as a distraction - I wouldn't recommend that!
It was made simpler by the fact that I got a new boyfriend at the time who didn't smoke and he wouldn't kiss me if I had been smoking, and I soon decided that a good was better than lighting up
Other people I know that have given up in a different way said that they broke their lives down into sections so they became a person that smokes, but not at work, and then after a while they smoke but not at work or on weekday mornings, and then not before 7pm on weekdays, and then not in their home on weekdays, then not before evening at weekends etc etc etc. They usually end up as people that *don't* smoke except when in the pub drinking or something like that. Seems quite effective.
Good luck if you want to quit, as with everything like this you need support from your nearest and dearest and they need to understand that you may turn into a bit of a cow while the actual nicoteen withdrawl takes place - this is a good argument for the big full stop, you only get the nasty withdrawl once and then it is over relatively quickly - just got the habit to beat after that.
- in the absence of a good luck smiley I think that the loobrush one looks a bit like a four-leaf clover...
k who likes her
