I wanted to write about subcultures, because in high school years identity is very important and can affect academics, social and emotional development. Personally, I would identify myself as a Science nerd, Literature Geek and Orchestra Nerd, however my school is a healthcare centered school, which means it's primarily divided into those who want to be doctors, nurses, and others. In my school, it's very small so there isn't much emphasis placed on arbitrary cliques.

Hey, this is a great overview - and useful to outsiders, as well.
Two suggestions:
1. Please remove the red from the text. We're boring like that, it's a fixed format.
2. How about changing that last sentence? 'How do you identify?' It's entirely possible that the reader - like, say, me - is too ancient to identify, because they're not in high school any more.
How about 'Do you recognise any of these types?' Maybe somebody else has a different suggestion.
It's kind of reassuring. I graduated from high school in 1970 - and I recognise most of these types. Of course, 'Goth' and 'emo' weren't types, back then - but we had 'em, anyway...we also had 'hoods' and 'hippies'...
My best bud: 'Dmitri, read 'Dracula'. It will change your life...'
He was right - it did.

Thanks for commenting so fast! Where's the red text? I looked at the preview and didn't see anything.
1970s isn't ancient!

This is good stuff Ramya even the title is spot-on. I look forward to seeing this make progress towards the Guide.

This seems a little bit John Hughes to me. When I worked at a school, it was an alternative school for kids kicked out of other schools. The thing that I see that's missing is the gang members. I live in a pretty decent county with good schools, but I can find gang graffiti in any of them.
There are probably others I could groups that I could be identified For instance, some of our schools have redness who drive jacked up trucks. They're a sub-culture of their own.
I'm sure there are others.

I don't know who John Hughes is.
And I hope there aren't any gangs in Ramya's school. I dunno about those jscked-up trucks.

My school is pretty small and strict, so we don't really have any gangs
The reason I didn't put gangs is that I didn't really want to stereotype anyone, gangs can consist of any race, creed, or status.

I think I'd agree with that, Ramya. You want this to be light-hearted, not write a sociopolitical treatise, I'm thinking.

John Hughes did a series of movies dealing with high schoolers and their troubles. The most relevant to this discussion is the Breakfast Club.
How useful is this article? Does it reflect social strata at high schools everywhere or just the suburbs, which is how I take it. It sounds like the high school I briefly attended or that are featured on TV. I wonder if rural or urban high schools are different.

They are. I mentioned in the article that this was just a general guide, and that each school may have its different subcultures. There are three main ones at my school: Doctors, Nurses, and the extremely large and vague other

This entry may inspire others to write entries on urban school cultures, or rural school cultures - maybe even one about homeschooling as a culture?

Interesting entry. I feels like a companion piece to A2265842. At least, that's the first thing that came into my head. Is there potentially some crossover/links to that entry, possibly?

Good entry...
The only small niggles I have is that most teenage punks would not be seen dead moshing to heavy metal, and certainly not nodding to Ozzy Osbourne! Also, Emo and Goth are very distinct things.

I'm bringing this to the top of the list, it seems to have been forgotten about, even though it has had many positive reviews.
