story about loss. I thought badgers lived in setts, but we don't have them in US and I might be mistaken.

I think both holt and sett are acceptable. When I looked them up in my old dictionary, it gave holt as the lair of an animal, particularly an otter, but it didn't give sett at all. Which leaves me confused.
