Nobody seemed to mention it or do my eyes deceive me, but that sign says 100 km on the left. Now that's what I call an early warning.

Yep, that's an hour at permitted maximum speed so it's plenty of time to decide how genuine the sign is... on that l-o-n-g empty road down towards Queenstown and Fiordland.
Mind you, the place might have closed in-between times, through lack of custom...
