A Conversation for Big Churches in Little Europe: Ely

Thanks for this!
I don't often get homesick, and although my home in the UK is a stone's throw from Ely, I never went there often as a kid. So, when my son did some teaching practice at King's School a couple of years ago and I visited him there, I had the wonderful experience of driving into Ely and seeing the Cathedral across the fields on a cold, clear winter morning. The experience was new and yet familiar to me, but your reminding me of it still evoked a strong pang of homesickness.

I am so glad you have written what you have in your comment. I was thinking of the church in summer when the sky and the view are hard. In the autumn the approach is soft and the Cathedral looms out at you above your head. In winter it is as you describe it.
Ely is an amazing place.

That is a truly lovely building. It must take your breath away just being inside it. I bet the acoustics are wonderful, thanks for sharing it PT.

Great observation - I have updated the forthcoming entry on Canterbury Cathedral because you have both made me think of so many wonderful things!
