A Conversation for The Embassy: Extraterritorial Nuisance or Beacon of Hope?

I'm sorry I almost missed this one. About ten years ago I did some construction work at the Chancery of Pakistan, in Washington DC. It is located between Malaysia and Nigeria, and is across the street from Israel. I made 3 or 4 trips up there and the last one was after the building had been turned over. The flag was flying and several visitors arrived and departed while I was there. Technically I was on Pakistani soil. The steward at the entry wore a formal business suit with sandals on his feet.
One of the biggest concerns was that we were working out-side the country so my company lost most of the rights we had to demand payment for our work.
While the instillation crew went to lunch I stayed behind to watch the tools as a safety precaution. I remember having a long talk with one of the diplomats about his travels and places I had been. He told me his favourite city was London and he urged me to visit there.
