Hi

Can I apologise for any misplaced tags, everytime I tried to correct one of my own errors, the system introduced another 2 random tags elsewhere (or completly rewrote a link) , and I've got fed up chasing them down.

Another excellent entry.
You could link to:
A58371168 Steam Engine Wheel Arrangements
A48502 The London Underground
You've also spelt Modernisation both the British and American way – I'd change the 'Modernization' to 'Modernisation' to be consistent.

I like the lists, I assume you have considered having two separate lists for each section, one entitled Pros and one entitled Cons?

You weren't using Pliny to write the entry, by any chance?

The list of pros and cons for steam is confusing - you talk about tender engines being better because they had the water in a separate unit behind the engine so they didn't reduce in traction as the water was used up, then you say that they were worse because the weight of the water wasn't used to increase traction. Later you say that diesels are better because they don't have that weight of water. The whole issue of traction needs to be stated more clearly.

I'm also confused by the fact that diesels are more complex than steam but require less maintenance - surely if they have more moving parts, they need more maintenance?

These points might all be clearer if, as someone already suggested, you have separate lists for pro and con.

Not sure what "each couple" means in this: "the driver and fireman each looking out of small windows along the length of the engine. Each couple only see half of what was ahead"

Surely each couple sees all of what is ahead. Do you mean "each only see half of what was ahead" ?

It's further confused by "went" in the rest of the sentence which should be "when".

Hi jon

I'm having problems with the obscure title of this Entry. Unless you click and actually read it, you've no idea that it's about railways and the end of steam power.

Could you change it? You might get more reviewers that way? For example:

"Railways in Great Britain, the Change from Steam to Diesel"

I had it like this since it is the intro to a series of dieselisation entries, I will alter if people think it is needed

It would be a lot easier for people looking for /recerching the subject to find with the entry a search engine if the title were changed just a little. smiley - smiley

I think the title change is easier to understand if you are not a rail enthusiast, although I would still consider splitting your lists into pros and cons.

As this appears to be the first of seven (to date) articles about diesels, have you considered the University Project route?

Note from Guide Editors

The conversation title has been now altered to reflect jon's new title for the Entry. I hope this attracts more reviewers to this worthy Entry.

it was originally going to be a uni project, but its kind of been a back burner for a few years. I wasn't sure if uni projects were still on in newh2g2

I agree with <BB< and others, this would definitely be better with separate pros and cons lists.

The pros and cons lists now show clearly that for steam, the cons easily outweighed the pros, vice versa for diesel and that there was no clear winner for electric. smiley - ok

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
