Alas I've not got anything to add about the Olympic Games, but here are a few words to add about a similar, but often-overlooked, international sporting event.

Sorry, can you do something about your guide ml? The right side bar is wider than the text. smiley - smiley

I think that's because of the link to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. It seems to interfere with the column widths. I don't know whether someone is able to suggest how to include a link to that article without it disrupting the layout?

I remember we had that problem before and used the http:// url to the entry and a title tag. I'll see if I can find it again.

smiley - run

Yes, here it is: A19773499

It's shown in the sidebar as Llanfair PG:

>>Wales also boasts one of the world's longest and most unpronounceable place names, a browser-unfriendly 58-letter epic, which we shall refer to here as Llanfair PG (hlan-vire PG), its accepted abbreviation.<<

No title tag, just the abbreviation. smiley - smiley

I think, however, if you put:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Anglesey, Wales the Title tag should overrule the long name.

Or see your Post article where it works just fine as:

A85696726 Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch railway station.

Anyway, it's interesting. smiley - smiley

Hi there,

That's an interesting entry you have there. I've never heard of it but I'm not much of a sports fan so that's hardly a surprise. While it isn't Olympic it certainly seems to embody the Olympic spirit smiley - cool

The only thing I was curious about was: why does the Isle of Wight not carry their own flag?
If you know the answer I'd like you to share it because it seems a bit strange that while they have a flag they'd rather fly the English flag.

Thanks.smiley - applause

The Isle of Wight flies the flag of St George as it is a county of England, despite having its own identity. There is also still a debate about the Isle of Wight flag, as the Island has now had 3 flags. The oldest was a white band (symbolising the Island's chalk spine) between two vertical green stripes (symbolising the Island's green fields). This design was nicked by Nigeria in 1959, although Nigeria has wider green stripes and the green is darker. In 1939 a flag on a blue (sea) background with a representation of Carisbrooke Castle in the centre surrounded by gold anchors to the west, south and east, symbolising the Island's maritime heritage.
The new flag was only officially introduced in January 2009 and many Islanders prefer the traditional green and white striped flag. As the Island had previously competed under the English flag it is currently carrying on competing under that flag. That may possibly in the future, though.

I don't know how much of this to include in the entry, though, as it is more about the history of the Isle of Wight than about the Island Games.

Oh I don't think you'd need to include any of it but it satisfied my curiousity.smiley - ta

Nice one >BB> smiley - ok

Tiny point: you need to insert a non-breaking space between – and Å in the two instances of <<– Åland>> ie – Åland
The whitespace between two adjacent special character codes is always ignored.

This is a really much more interesting Entry than the title makes out. I'm sorry to see it being overlooked in Peer Review.

I wonder whether a more descriptive title would pull in more readers?

*makes note to request this is featured on the new FP this coming week.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

I'll be happy to discuss the title. I too was a little unsure of it, which is why I considered renaming it something like 'The Island Games: an overlooked international Sporting event', but couldn't decide.

I'm impressed that I've managed to get a sport-related article into the Guide, considering my zero knowledge or interest in the subject smiley - winkeye
