I closed my web browsers and other software, shut the computer down completely, came back several hours later, started the pc up again, brought up my web browser, which I'd shifted to a noohootoo homepage, and found myself still signed in.
Apparently I'd failed to sign out on the last session and the server did not sign me out automatically when I terminated the connection.

Just checking -- had you checked the "Remember me" box on the login screen, the very first time you arrived here?

Nope. As a matter of fact, if I had a "Don't you dare ever remember me anywhere." button, I'd use it
I'll just have to be careful to remember to sign out.
I'm concerned on this one since if its a generalized problem it will use up valuable server time and space, slowing the system down for others.

The tech team are working on a very pervasive and central bug that affects many aspects of sign-on, a bug that only manifested after we disconnected from the bbc. It's the Mother Bug. I will certainly check the bug report database and see whether this aspect has been spotted before.

Hi, just to let you know a bit more about this;
One of the most complicated things we're getting with extricating h2g2 from the BBC is getting it properly out of the BBCiD system. This isn't easy unfortunately as it affects a lot of things.
At the moment we're logging people in using a JavaScript cookie, which is why it'll stay there even after you've turned your machine off. As soon as we've sorted out how to get it to recognise the better (in my opinion) temporary session cookies we'll be providing both as an option.
Until then, sorry. Please try to remember to sign out.

I would like to sign out before closing when hootooing at work, but the "sign out" button is not on every page - I have to go back to my PS to find one.

I'm afraid that's because of how the skins we inherited work.
We've got a rebuild planned, and that is something we're planning on implementing.

I can still only access this site using Google Chrome on my Mac (OSX 10.58) Not Safari or Firfox.
It now won't let me sign out from the site..despite restarting computer.
I *hate* Google Chrome..are they making some money from being the only browser to access this place for Macs like mine?
******I WANT TO SIGN OUT FROM THIS SITE.
Being prevented from doing so is not SAFE in my opinion.
Pastey can you tell me how the hell I can sign out please?

Hi Effers, as Z said the logout problem is fixed. We had a bit of a caching problem with the server that handles all our secure stuff, the user logib/logout and the tools we use.
If you ever need to log out but have problems, clearing your cookies will take care of it for you

yeah thanks so very much for sorting it.
Do you think I'll ever be able to access h2g2 on Mac Safari?
I know you have so much to do and it's not a priority. It's out of curiosity and hope really..that at some point in the future I can do that.

You should be able to Effers. Can you let me know what skin you use?
If you try to go direct to http://vogons.h2g2.com/login and login, you should be able to get in.

Pastey do you think the 'eyes' thing will be sorted out ever?
Nearly everytime I go online day or night..the 'eyes' are already on, on my space.
It used to be indicative of someone being online.
Now all it means is that someone has clicked on your space...or some internet crawler.
It is utterly meaningless though now for us humans.
( someone or people must like clicking on my space a heck of a lot..I don't see it so much for people's spaces...)
It would be so really nice to get that fixed IMO. (but I'm not nagging..much... I know you've a lot on).
