What do you mean you can't download a CD, only singles and stuff? You might have to compile it yourself, but you can get pretty much anything you want if you look around.
http://www.kazaa.com/ is a good place to start, but don't download software from there - it comes with a load of spyware - http://www.kazaalite.com has the same software without the spyware. Or try http://www.winmx.com/
I haven't heard of half the stuff you're talking about though - it's probably a sign I'm getting old.

I use WinMX
I mean you can't download a solid object, CK!
I would say that I have nearly a full u2 album, but I won't for the purposes of moderation. Plus, I "haven't"

Ah - now what you need there is a transporter, rather than a PC. Then you can beam stuff down. Or up, depending on your point of view. You'd need the co-ordinates to beam them from, but if you've the wherewithal to equip yourself with a transporter I can't see that being a problem for you.
I wouldn't say that I have just got myself a Stones album, a Grateful Dead album, a Springsteen album and a Talking Heads album, because I haven't, of course.

Of Course, CK!
I also have just completed not downloading all of the tracks from Coldplay's new album, A Rush of Blood to the Head

C'mon Nat, you're not slow, and if we explain why we're saying we haven't got these albums, we risk moderation

Although as for a transporter - I'm with you on this one, I've never heard of one before, in the realms of computing, at least...

Oh, sorry, I thought you were being relative to technology that exists! A Kind of Internet replacement...
"I've been on the radio 6 times actually..."
I didn't know Radio 6 had its own magazine

I know what a transporter is!
And I know what you mean by *not*
It's the rest of it that bamboozles me. I need things explained to me! I can't guess about what they mean?
Bloody net s...

You know what a transporter is? Care to enlighten me? If it can replace the mp3 'industry', tell away
Most of the techy stuff I can just make up and it'll probably stand for something.. LAME is what's used for making mp3 (songs) files, and CRAP is a web page maker

Beam me up Scotty!
That's what a transporter is.
Isn't it obvious?

So which bit needed explaining? Was it that post with the links and the comments about spyware?
If so, the links were to sites (I know you can't follow them, but aka can) where you can download software for file-sharing. This has taken over from Napster (remember Napster?) and enables people who have it to share files on their computer with everybody else who has it. So if you've got it, and I've got it, and I have, say, for the sake of argument, an album you wanted, then you could download it from my machine to yours. But you wouldn't. Actually, what you'd do if you were to do it, which you wouldn't, is to search for the things you want.
Spyware (also adware) is something that comes with some of this software (notoriously Kazaa, but not the other 2 I mentioned). It's basically commercial stuff that you have to install at the same time as the software you want, and it reports back where you've been surfing so it can more effectively target marketing at you. Or spam you, in reality. And who knows what else. Which nobody wants, hence my comments.
You'll want to remember all this when you get your laptop!
Got to - the breadmaker is beeping!

another one is Gnucleus, which I think is http://www.gnucleus.org or http://www.gnucleus.com - like http://www.winmx.com WinMX, it's good for its minimalistic features, yet high functionality, although I don't like Gnucleus - I can never find anything I want, and most of the time people post misleading stuff within a different file type for what you're looking for - I prefer WinMX, because you can set it to look for [x name of song or artist] as an [mp3 / picture / movie] etc.. So no more misleading files - just pure music
When (Or If? ) You get a PC and online properly, make sure you check out WinMX

aka - I'm sure you and my other with the different spelling will both help me through the pC/laptop experience. Once I manage to make it happen...
