There is a rumour that AD Miller is Bagehot (http://www.economist.com/blogs/bagehot). I hope it isn't true as I've always rather liked Bagehot.
I think this is a horrible book and I wish it had never been written. I hated the plot and the main character. I hated what was going to happen.
I didn't like the shallow description of russia, it did nothing to chalenge the aterotypes in my mind. The beautiful women in cheap clothes, the vodka, the criminals, the memories of communism...
i didn't like the moral relativism either, the main character didn't regret things that happened in Russia. He blamed everyone else- his lawyer partner was probably in on it; the aunt seemed to expect what was happening. He had no choice but to follow Masha..
I wouldn't mind that this book was quite so miserable if it was interesting.

How odd, I also thought that this was a horrible book, it was just nasty. And it planted some sort of horrible cookie in my mind, I kept thinking about it for days.
