To adopt the appearance of a meerkat on watch duty. most commonly seen on cannabis lovers who think they have caught the scent in a public place

Sorry Baron, was that they were reacting the smell of cannabis in public or that they were on guard protecting the smoker thereof? Where is this used as a verb?

reacting to the smell. its the way the head quickly darts from one position to another trying to track down the direction its coming from. my friends have called it meerkatting for years, even people who have given up a long time ago still react unconsciously to the smell

Hi there Barnonvonpenguin and Elektra! The hippies barely featured here in South Africa. I don't even know what cannabis smells like. But at any rate thanks for telling me about 'meerkatting'!

My understanding of the verb 'meerkatting' was the random popping-up of heads over the walls of densely-populated office cubicles.

And it's definitely NOT 'mongeese'! Shame on you for suggesting it.

One mongoose is a mongoose. Two or more are mongooses (or, if you like, a polygoose smiley - winkeye )

Love this series, by the way.

That may be where the term came from, but none of my friends work in that kind of cubicle set up so I've only ever heard it in relation to smokers. Would a Multigoose be acceptable? I know its not technically correct but it has a nice ring to it.
