Interesting item, BB. Are you close enough to this to get some photos? Although we can only use one until the server migration is complete, hopefully we won't be so limiting in the future.smiley - smiley

He's not, but I know an old Researcher who might. I'll see if I can tempt him back to have a look over this.

That would be smiley - cool, VIP. Thanks for all your help with the Guide. It's nice to see people are doing rather than talking about it.

Heck, little praise is to come to me right now - this is the first bit of reviewing I've done in weeks - and it's not even a review! I suppose I've been doing a lot of contributing to h2g2, just not as much to the Guide itself these days.

If I do have time, I will come back and read this as I have visited Kirkstall Abbey, even if it was a good few years ago.

Gnomon - time to move on

This is great, Bluebottle. It gives a good picture of life in a Monastery.

in the list of abbeys in Yorkshire, it might be better if you ordered it by date rather than alphabetically.

You have "Henry de Lacy" and "Henry de Lacey". Which is correct?

was in fact the centre of a range of granges -- this suggests that the Abbey was itself a grange. I presume it wasn't, in which case this should be "at the centre of a range of granges".

only the ill in the infirmary -- I'm not sure of the word "ill" here. Shouldn't it be "sick"? Any English person like to comment?

water ale and wine to drink -- do you mean they drank water, ale and wine? If so, add a comma after water. Or is "water ale" a type of drink? Then add a footnote explaining it.

to find a loophole out of that -- this doesn't sound right.

I've more changes to suggest, but they're all things a sub-editor can handle. I'll list them here later, so as not to distract from a review of the content of this Entry.

Hello - thank you for all your suggestions, changes have been made.

Although I personally don't live anywhere near Kirkstall Abbey, my inlaws do. So I've visited the abbey lots and taken several photos over the years. Some of the photos don't have my kids in, either.

I need new glasses. I read the title on my convo list as 'Kirstie Alley, and wondered why she was in West Yorkshire. smiley - sadface

Well, there's no reason why she couldn't come to West Yorkshire, do some shopping in Leeds and see the Royal Armouries, visit the film museum in Bradford, go to the home of the Bronte family and ride on the steam railway where they filmed The Railway Children...

If there's a job going in the West Yorkshire Tourist Office, my slogo would be 'West Yorkshire: No-where near as nice as the Isle of Wight, obviously, but there are some nice bits'. Not sure I'd get the job, though.

Anyway, I've tidied up the links a little. Any other suggestions?

smiley - biro"Colonel North, bought the abbey for £10,000 and presented it to the City of Leeds in 1889."

I would make it a bit clearer that he only donated certain parts pf the abbey. Later on it talks about donating the Abbey House to someone else and it's confusing if you thought he'd given the whole lot to Leeds.

Otherwise, it's good stuff. smiley - smiley

Gnomon - time to move on

I've a ton of minor tweaks for this, but I'll give them directly to the sub-editor when this one is allocated. There are a few, though, I'd prefer Bluebottle to sort out:

This is clumsy and I think should be reworded:

many of the first Cistercian abbeys in Britain were founded there; all of which were founded within 25 years of the first Cistercian abbey in Britain

the site was close to a few villages, which the monks promptly evicted all villagers (should be "from which", but even then it doesn't sound right and should be rephrased)

In 1868 Lord Cardigan, who had led the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War, died

(the inserted bit between commas is far too big compared with the rest of the sentence)

Okay, changes made, sentances split into two seperate sentances and hopefully it all reads better now.
