A Conversation for Hieronymus Bosch - Artist
Bosch as Carnival
Researcher 230316 Started conversation Jun 7, 2003
Bosch seems to be to be a prime example of the artist expressing what is described in literary terms as carnival, the turning upside down of the world, the expression of the antithesis or opposite of accepted morays. His art can be seen as the fixing into church life, alter panels etc the need for expressions of rebellion against but also acceptance of the common theology and moral certainties of the day. He seems to be a man expressing the paradox of the human condition, falling endlessly into its own obession with self yet reaching for some higher idealistic moral ground which eludes it, much like the visions he seems to have painted.
