A Conversation for H2G2 Leaving The BBC Soon!

Gnomon - time to move on

Funny, I don't feel worried, because it's just another change. I've done the Douglas Adams to BBC change. In that one, we had a month when the site went down, with nobody able to log on and nobody telling us anything other than "Please wait..."

This time, we're all much more connected to each other, and we know we'll survive.

But you're not as neurotic as me smiley - winkeye

I still think the unknown is always a risk and its good to face that as well. No-one can completely predict the future because there are bound to be unforseen things happening.

But yes I'm basically optimistic.

Pastey

Each day through this process there are less unknowns, and therefore less reasons to worry.

It's certainly daunting, but not so scarey any more.

But Pastey, you're probably the only person who actually knows what's going on.

Mrs Zen

Well I'm terrified. But excited too.

It occurred to me that tomorrow could so easily have been h2g2's very last day....

I want to say a HUMUNGOUS thanks to Z, Pastey and Happy Nerd without whom it would have been the last day.

I know this has probably been explained a million times in different places that I have not seen but will the URL change and what will it be?
Can this be fixed on the front page of the old address? Will there be a forwarding address at the old site address? Will I stop asking questions?

What I've seen said, though I'd have trouble tracking it down right this minute, is that Jim Lynn is letting us have the old address. We will be at h2g2.com once more!

More important than the new address is the continuity of the old addresses, ie redirection. There are countless links out there to existing h2g2 pages, as well as upwards of 400 print-published ones.

I hope you've agreed redirection with the BBC.

Mrs Zen

There were 17 of us. The roll of honour is:

Happy Nerd, who raised our confidence after the first meeting and who kept us idealistic so we won a better deal than anyone would have expected.

Witty Moniker, who stuck in there through some horrible thick and frightening thin and kept us focused on the intelligent humanity that's at the core of h2g2.

Milla who proofread in a foreign language and made the Book possible; I wish you'd seen them looking through it when we handed it out at The Bid.

Tavaron whose designs made the bid beautiful and who continues to blow our minds with the endless possibilities of space and time, and who constantly checked everything.

2legs who brought us sanity.  Yes, I did say that.  And who kept us focused on the insane humanity which is one of the many things that h2g2 is about. And who held out the candle that nighthoover may return.

Magwitch who did some quiet but very heavy lifting, in particular she waded through the DNA Hub.

Pastey whose unshakeable confidence, kindness and endless patience with us muggles was matched only by his shameless love of beer.

Whoami who waded through the stranger recesses of not-for-profit organisational structures and enabled us to create a fair deal for the community.

Sol who was inspired and inspiring about new educational and charitable work that noohootoo can do, and who is making it a vision that many who don't know about the site will find inspiring too.

Malabarista who ensured the illustrations in the book worked well in print and kept us good humoured when things got fraught.

Jordan who held a quiet but constant candle for the vision of what h2h2 can and surely will be, the guide that Douglas Adams originally intended.

Vip whose gentle persistent integrity kept a constant focus on the twin pillars and the community and the guide and always reminded us that one is nothing without the other.

Mr D held steady-as-she-goes and brought oxygen into debates where everyone else was groggy on each others' CO2.

Ottox kept a sane and cautious eye on what we were proposing, and tracked down down 200 user IDs for the Community Consortium so that they will be recognised.

And finally, Z, who started us on this crazy and fabulous roller-coaster and contacted Robbie and the Larholms creating a way for it all to happen.

And me? I guess was the bad cop. smiley - winkeye

Its just I don't like these lists when people get missed off. 2legs once told me she did loads and loads more than him.

I was once missed off some other list with my 'unbland' contribution..probably it wasn't used..I don't have a clue.

Or maybe people belong in different lists?

Just speaking my mind.
