A Conversation for New Year's Resolutions for your Friends and Family

Resolving the resolution problem

Robert The Construction Operative

1. Make A Gregorian Calendar Resolution (1st Jan 200x) to be Chinese, thus giving you 2 extra months to skive off your resolution.

2. Make a UN resolution, this allows you to ignore whatever it was while the international community sits idly by.

Why make a resolution at all?

Webster(1) defines a resolution as "The act, operation, or process of resolving. Specifically: The act of separating a compound into its elements or component parts."

I fail to understand the surge of interest in physical chemistry that accompanies the New Year festivities. Unless the chemical processes involved are the digestion of turkey and stuffing sandwiches in my stomach and the dialysis of alcohol in my liver.

(1) Webster is a spider that lives in the right wing mirror of my car and should not be confused with any ohter websters, living, dead, or dictionaries.

In my opinion the whole concept of New Year's resolution is flawed. After all, if one has the willpower and motivation to carry out a radical change of one's lifestyle (quit smoking, start exercising, lose those extra pounds one always seems to be lugging about), the project could be initiated at any given time. The calendar has 365 days to choose from (and every four years or so, a bonus), and there is no logical reason why New Year's Day - a notoriously bad time to start anything given the considerable size of one's hangover smiley - hangover - should be better suited than any other day of the year. Therefore, New Year's Resolutions are merely a repetitive scam instigated by diet-book authors, gyms, and the manufacturers of Nicorette to make up for their sales slump in the gift-giving month of December, and no one should feel guilty at failing to keep them, or at least any guiltier than they would have at any other time of the year.

I think there are two possible reasons for New Year's Resolutions rather than mid-April resolutions or Thursday resolutions:

1) new year, new beginning; or

2) How much did I drink last night? Oh, God, never again!

I'm getting married in September so my resolutions are connected to that: must save money, must diet, must exercise, must brush up on my French (honeymoon in Paris).
