I'd never heard of it in reference to Everton until I read your own excellent entry, only ever known it as a(nother) Sunderland nickname.
(is that 49 years 'to date' rather than 'ever', we were in the top flight for something like 68 consecutive seasons, beaten only fairly recently by Arsenal I think).

The Everton article has been sent off to the editors, so I'm afraid anything that there now will have to stay. Just as well I got a few last minute changes in.
I must say I was impressed by how successful Sunderland were early on. I had no idea that they were so successful. Everton were relegated for the first time in 1930 I think, but that was just after we won the title. I don't think anyone could explain that one . We came back up the following season, and guess what, we won the title. Goes to show how strange a team Everton are . But I love them all the same .

Congratulations
I think we've had similar runs of luck/bad luck, I'm surprised we never got nicknamed 'the yoyos'

Probably. We'll probably do an Ipswich, get really high up the table this season, and get relegated because of european commitments.

Something I've always wondered is : What does the 'A' in Sunderland AFC stand for? I think that would be a useful thing to add in. Its probably going to be something really obvious now, but I might as well ask it all the same .

I think AFC just stands for "Association Football Club".

Sorry.
Still gleefully getting mileage out of the underwear on sale during that 1998 play-off final.
The draft for the Penalty Shoot-Out is here ...

Bah humbug, I'd just about forgiven CAFC for that.
Why did I read through the whole piece expecting it to suddenly turn out to be about something entirely different?

I'm still working on a punchline.
Something like ...
"Up steps Michael Gray ..."
