I have been using a pendulum myself for a few years, and as I am quite satisfied by the way it works, I never really wanted to go to the bottom of things and try and understand "why" it works.

However, I came across several "theories" of the thing, some about telekinesy, some about energies and Chi, but the most complete explanation I have read so far is here :

The pendulum moves because of slight, unvoluntary movements of the arm, hand, shoulder, etc.
These movements are a way the subconscious can communicate with the conscious.
So the meaning of the movement can be learnt (clockwise for "yes", anticlockwise for "no"), or just be decided, an "agreement" made buy the conscious self with our inconscious part.
"Advanced" users step into more complex forms of communication (or build their own) when trying a variety of sizes and shapes, different materials, cristals, empty pendulum where a sample can be placed, etc.

I like the explanation (I am not trying to believe it), because it is very sound and usually keeps the most sceptical ones quiet !
