I'm truly confused now. I hope someone will explain to me how it can be that with Pliny down, it is possible to change the guide articles on the Front page, without all the links going nowhere except error pages.

Pliny isn't down, it's just broken but no one seems to know exactly how and why. I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever recover. With it hosed for so long I'm afraid were losing any new readers that may happen upon our front page.

We're able to update the Front Page, but, alas, the effort to locate the Pliny issue is still ongoing.

We are all frustrated. Pray for us. We particularly appreciate novenas directed to the Great Prophet Zarquon.

So, when people go to our front Page and click on the icons, are they then directed to the articles in Ripley skins? Or does Pliny work one article at a time?

They get an error message that the article couldn't be found. You can't read any articles in Pliny right now even if you manually enter the URL.

Would it be worth temporarily putting up a Ripley front page instead, with links that work?

Fifteen years ago, there were far more researchers here than there are now. The existing skins managed to handle the traffic.

Just sayin'.

Yeah but...

That was before the BBC dumped us but gutted the software. This site has never functioned well at any capacity since then.

Paulh, the Ripley skin is well able to handle the number of Researchers on this site. The problem is not the Researchers, it is the Readers.

When the site was finally got working after the BBC handed it over, we found that the Ripley system would crash under the load of readers every couple of days. We moved the readers onto the Pliny system and this eased the load on Ripley.

But user statistics show that a fair number of readers are now using Ripley (since Pliny is not available) and to my knowledge the Ripley system has only crashed perhaps twice in the last 6 weeks.

I'm sure we're losing readers at a significant rate so Ripley could probably handle the current load, sadly.
