A85682640 - 'Japanese Worcestershire Sauce'

I thought this would be a good compliment to the existing A126631 Worcestershire Sauce entry. smiley - ok

I agree - good stuff! smiley - biggrin

Just one thing; what's Yoshoku? You talk a lot about how it's not strictly authentic, and how it's only served special occasions, but not what it is. smiley - smiley

>>They've even given this love of exotic cuisine from far away places a special name...

Yoshoku<<

Sorry Vip, I thought I was being clever by finishing the sentence as a subheader. smiley - erm Perhaps I just made it confusing. Yoshoku is basically Western cuisine. The things we eat as 'normal' foods in the UK are exotic to the Japanese. Yoshoku is the all encompassing name they've given to these foods. Omelettes, burgers, macaroni cheese are all Yoshoku dishes. Perhaps I should reword it to emphasise the connection to Western food. I was writing it quite late at night so it wouldn't surprise me if I need to re-jig something.smiley - smiley

Hi Radox - how lovely to see you here! How's things with you?

Thanks for writing this wonderful piece. I love it! As Vip and Mr D have said, it is excellent and gives an insight into a different culture than our own.

I spotted a few typos, so do excuse my pedantic nature by pointing them out now - it saves time later for the sub-editors.

smiley - biro palette ----> palate ( the other spelling refers to the artist's colours)

smiley - biro re Footnote 1: Footnotes should be complete sentences - so I suggest something along the lines of

[You can do this by] stopping on the way to buy steam buns to leave as offerings!

smiley - biro but [it's] popularity ---> [its]

smiley - biro is Worcestershire sauce. It's even pronounced properly

I'd love to have a second footnote here - ie how is Worcestershire sauce pronounced . . . remembering we are a global website with many, many overseas readers. Can you write it phonetically in a footnote please?

I say it like this 'Wusstah' dunno if that is correct?

. . . ah, I see they give the pronunciation on the page you linked to - so I will leave it to your judgment as to whether you think it necessary here or not. Personally I think it might help as yours is the stronger of the two pieces and a lot of people might not bother to click through and find out the proper pronunciation.

smiley - biro h2g2 guide entry ---> h2g2 Edited Guide Entry

smiley - biro was first introduced [to] Japan but ---> [into]

smiley - biggrin It really is good Radox, almost flawless - what will you write for us next?

smiley - zen <----This is me waiting patiently for your next piece, and in the meantime cheers! smiley - redwine

smiley - yikesThat's just embarrassing, using the wrong palate.smiley - blush Like I said, I wrote it late at night. The pronunciation thing was a jokey reference to the other Worcestershire sauce entry which sparked a debate on the correct way to pronounce it. Perhaps if I linked it to the thread...um, can you link to a thread in an EG entry? Best not actually, the Beeb never promised to let us take the conversation threads with us. We'll be lucky enough if the guide survives. smiley - sadface I'll mull that one over a bit.

Agh! Curse that grocers apostrophe!smiley - headhurts

What's next? Well, I might do another entry on Japan...possibly a fire festival...maybe Wagashi...something on Okinawa or Hokkaido...Japan's war against Korea (bit heavy that one). I'm watching 'Breathe Kyoto' on NHK World which has just given me an idea for another one (all about how what you're told in Kyoto may have a different meaning). There's a wealth of entries that could be written about Japan once you get beyond just viewing the nation as a whole. Or I might just put up something Somerset related...like Trumpton (really).smiley - smiley

I'll sort out the typos and ponder on the other points raised later on, when I'm back from the Docs.smiley - doctor

smiley - bigeyes Radox, as I said - this piece was almost flawless - it is everso easy to type the wrong word - and spellchecks don't know which meaning you want.

Looking forward to your next article.

Ah smiley - eureka Once this is in the noohootoo Guide - you can attach a conversation thread, in a new conversation at the bottom. That would be the very easiest way of keeping the information in one place.

( I have confidence that we will take the convos with us - the Guide would be an empty husk without them)

Typo's done (including the others that smiley - erm weren't mentioned) smiley - whistle Ahem!

I've tweaked a few lines here and there to make them (hopefully) flow better not worse.

I've reworded it to make the Western connection more obvious (my fault there, I watch NHK World TV quite a lot and forget that others aren't so familiar with the various Japanese terms)

I've put in new Footnotes with a Hootoo feel to them. The Shrine Keeper grocery list thing is true btw, I saw it on an NHK show a couple of weeks back.smiley - biggrin

Feel free to give it a recheck in case I've messed up something with the rewrites etc., I think it's OK now but I might have missed something.

Oh, and I changed 'proved' to 'proven' because I thought it scanned better when reading. I checked the dictionary to see if I was using it incorrectly but rather unhelpfully all it said was it meant 'proved'.

Anyway, yer 'tis as they say around here.smiley - smiley

Great entry Radox. smiley - ok

Proved and proven is practicaly a cultural think between England and Scotland. However I go with if something was in doubt its proven, but if it was sure but had to be tested then its proved. (Not a great help.)

I know, the bumps were for my own benefit as I keep losing this thread among all the changeover waffle. It would be good if they could be merged together a bit, but some people have a habit of starting spinoff threads whenever they get an idea that could have been raised in the existing ones (gives a Paddington Bear stare to a certain female committee member) smiley - raisedeyebrow

I've made a minor alteration to the footnotes to add in the name 'Worcester' which doesn't appear anywhere else in the entry. Consequently if anyone searched for 'Worcester Sauce' or even 'Japanese Worcester Sauce' instead of 'Worcestershire' it wasn't showing in the h2g2 search findings.

Oddly when I first added 'Worcester', it placed halfway up the first results page. When I tried moving it from the footnotes to the body of the entry it went to the bottom of the search results. Changing it back to the footnote still has it as the final search result.smiley - weird Still, at least it shows up now.smiley - smiley
