A Conversation for The Importance of Being Mediocre

Fame and the Flame

Ah yes. Great essay, mvp. Thought provoking and makes me think about that bright burning entity known as the Fame Flame. (I just made that up heheh). I would agree that the glorious state of Mediocrity is far deeper, priceless in fact, and leaves no burn scars. Funny the word Mediocre, meaning moderate quality?, because it has somehow suffered I think, used in many contexts as a derogatory term, to describe something that burns dimmer than the Fame Flame.Let us free this word! Not so! Not so! Mediocre is Marvellous! Sort of thing, like. You got me going there. heheh.

Makes me think of Andy Warhol's expression . Actually I know someone who did a serious of workshops on this. Sort of turned it over, made it positive. Within the safe context of the group, everyone had , in whatever way they wanted. A song, a reading, a dance. Without getting burned by the Fame Flame.

Thanks, cactuscafe.smiley - smiley

The Fame Flame is a good term: it warms and it burns.

I'm not sure about a 'serious of workshops' though. smiley - laugh A 'laugh of workshops' might be better!

I think you have to be very lucky to make serious money by writing. smiley - sadface

The published authors I've met make their living by lecturing, or editing magazines.

I think I write for the power smiley - evilgrin. The words actually do what I want them to do - sometimes!

haha yes. Funny what comes out in typos. A serious of intense workshops. smiley - rofl.

Yes, we know a few people who just about make a living from their artistic output, like writing and painting, but it comes with a price. Like the rent. And emotional exhaustion. Some glory though. Achievement and all that.

We have one friend who worked herself to a frazzle for years and years to get to the point where her poems were published. When they finally were, she didn't feel the way she thought she would feel. In fact she panicked, and drove around town all night, stopping only to take the ghost of her long dead Grandfather out for a Chinese takeway. Mad poets, eh. smiley - rofl. (true story).

. Now, that is a most interesting approach. I wonder if that's why I write? I thought I wrote to keep me sane and balance my brain, but perhaps that's the same thing, sort of, but doesn't sound quite so interesting. hmm

smiley - erm Possibly. It helps to write ideas down - it sort of crystallises them.

It's a nice change from the boring housework.

Maybe it keeps the smiley - senior dementia at bay.

Now what did I do with my keys?
