HEDGE WITCH
What is a hedge witchLike most other witchcraft descriptions it means different things to different people. Therefore the description we are about to look at will not cover all who class themselves as hedge-witches. The most generally accepted definition is that a hedge witch is a lone witch, who is not part of a group or coven, but also most often one who is more into the green arts, herbal cures and spells. | ![]() |
![]() | HistoricallyHistorically they would most often have been the local wise man or wise woman. Many today still are, helping those who they know with wisdom, cures, advice and tips to solve most problems that come up, from removing gum from clothing to what to do if you think that one night stand has resulted in a pregnancy. Most would also use magic or spells in some form. |
Religion
Hedge witches, can be of any religion, frequently were Christians and many still are, could be a Wiccan, but it is said rarely are and some have a nature based belief system. As lone practitioners they are often not inclined towards group ceremonies, group rituals or organised religion. Most would view themselves as one of the forms of traditional witchcraft.
Working togetherHistorically, as lone practitioners, few would have been in contact, however the internet has started to bring some together, and with other pagans and witches through discussion groups such as the BBC pagan board and recently a new web site specifivally for hedge-witches has been set up at www.hedge-witch.com this provides an aid for cooperation and the sharing of information. Some are members of the Traditional Craft Association A804809, and some may be a member of the Pagan Federation. (link to add). | ![]() |
