This is excellent .
I remember going to a nature reserve near Skegness in the late 70s where they were losing plant species because the grass was no longer being kept short. They were thinking of introducing sheep grazing.
One question - as the rabbit is a relatively recent introduction is this whole ecology relatively recent or did something play the rabbits role before it arrived?

Hi, Paladin-Knight!
This is a really good entry on a very interesting topic. I think it would be worth actually mentioning when rabbits were brought to Britain - Norman times may be recent by biological standards, but in historical terms that's quite long ago!
One little point I notice is that you often forget to type any spaces after a full stop - if you're editing the entry to make any changes, you could add a couple of spaces after each full stop.
Anyway, welcome to Peer Review - I'm always delighted to see entries about ecology and natural history, and this one will make a very worthwhile addition to the Guide.

I'm glad you like it or should I say relieved.
To answer your questions, over the century's this area has been mainly farmland and alot of sheep were grazed on this land but as farmer's started to grow more crops the number's of rabbits increased and the numbers of sheep decreased.
Thats one of the reasons as to why sheep are being re-introduced to the Downs.
As for the rabbits I'm not sure on the time that they were introduced I'm still trying to find this info out.

I live very near the southdowns and often go walking or cycling on them, and this is a very good article. It is consise and to the point without using too many technical terms. One point I did notice though, I'm not sure if it needs changing or not. At one point you say "biodiversity of living organisms", do you really need the "bio" part if you are saying "living organisms", what other type of diversity could they be? Feel free to ignore this, its not a major thing, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Good point Tango,thanks.
I've got some additional spaces to put in as well after the full stops,so I thought I'd collect your suggestions and then put them all in at once when my lot have gone to bed and I've got some peace and quiet.

I've inserted the requested spaces after the full stops.
I'm not sure on the biodiversity bit as in this piece I think it is gramatically correct but perhaps some more advice should be sought on the matter.
It is still an option that is under consideration.

on the spaces, Paladin-Knight!
I know that rabbits were intorduced here in Ireland by the Normans, but I'd always thought they'd been around longer in Britain, until now.
The Mammal society has a nice little entry about rabbits at
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/mammal/rabbit.htm which sounds fairly authoritative, and they say that it was the Normans who brought them to Britain, too. I imagine the South Downs would have been one of the earliest areas of Norman settlement, so I think it would be safe to say they've been around since the 12th century.

That would make sense as there are Saxon and Norman churches in that area.
I'm going to check out that web site you've posted so thanks for putting it in.

Nice entry.
I think you should somehow mention the virus earlier, I kept waiting for its appearance, and as it was I had sort of deduced the point of the article before reaching any mention of the virus.
Also I wonder how the virus was introduced? Was it intentional? Accidental? Expected? Carried in a coconut on a string by two European swallows?

It was introduced on purpose by farmers who saw the rabbit as being a pest because they ate the crops but it had a more devastateing affect than they thought.
You see the myxoma virus is carried by the rabbit flea and transmitted in a way similar to the plague and the farmers deliberately placed infected rabbits in the vicinity of warrens.

Very interesting. I had that question too. You should put that information in the entry.
Excellent entry, by the way. I told you they'd like it!

Hi Paladin.
A Scout has recommended this entry, but just want to be sure you're finished. Could you let me know if you're happy for this to go forward as it is?

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Hi, I've been given your entry to edit, looks good, I've already sorted the grammar of a few things and a little spelling here and there, can't say I'm very familiar with the subject (well I learnt about the South Downs in Geography last year but I don't know anything about myxoma) so I'll pop back if I've got any questions to ask
