Working on the principle that if you don't ask, you don't get, how about this: if the AWOL researchers don't show up to claim their prizes, why not distribute the prizes to those who were considerate enough not to sign up straight away, because they knew there would be a stampede, and decided it was their duty to wait until things had quietened down before registering (i.e. me)?
Just a thought.
