I think it is the accent that is to me amusing and offending at the same time.
Hence my friends in drama lessons tend to chose me as the villian due to my very sleek and british voice I don't mind because it gives it a sense of humour in a way aswell they are always saying that I either make a good super-villian or a comedic standpoint on stage, but it goes for the same for example
Alan Rickman:
he plays a very funny character in Galaxy Quest (Dr.Lazarus/Alexander dane)
But he can play a ruthless cunning villian- Robin hood and the prince of thieves (sheriff of nottingham) Die Hard (Hans gruber)
So the british accent juxtaposes 2 different matters

One reason that has been overlooked is that American actors do not like to take on the role of the 'baddie'. This leaves many opportunities for Messrs. Hopkins, Rickman and Irons to cross the Atlantic to a plentiful supply of work.
