h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

i was wondering if it would be possible if some artwok could be done for groups on h2g2. i mean, the edited guide gets loads of images, wich is great, the talking points get images, which is also great, new smilies are created, which is once again great, and the post gets loads and loads of images, which is great, but appart from the post other groups on h2g2 are left out.

i mean, it's great the post gets graphics and stuff, but considering the number of groups on h2g2, would it be fair for only this one to get graphics?

the post got graphic from post volunteers beforehand, so with the introduction of Community Artists other groups look forward to having artwork, yet none of them do. the post requires lots of regular images, but h2g2 groups only need one.

some groups like the hg2 waterworks alreay have quite a few images from early days on h2g2, while groups nowadays don't have this chance anymore.

anyway, i have a suggestion. For groups that do not have any artwork that was made for the group, a page is created where they can request a piece of artwork. They specify what they would like, then a few weeks later they are shown an image t check it meets what they'd like. if not, then perhaps small improvements can be made, although i'd have thought most people would be happy with the quality artwork created.

once the artwork is finished, it will be blobbed, added to the group page, then the group will appear for 1 week on the front page, giving the group some exposure and providing the group with a graphic.

this would probably start with just one entry a week, but you could have 5 entries a week.

this would make more use of the Community Artists scheme in benefiting the community with images, would provide the group with a great image and exposure, and would provide exposure of a group on the front page, helping to expand the community into those groups.

Either way you look at it, this idea, if implemented, would benefit everybody.

Hi Spook, this is a great idea!

At the moment we don't have enough artists to allow us to do this, but we are in the middle of an active recruitment drive. See my nickname, and the Front Page. Once we have a healthy supply of (we're aiming to double the number we currently have), we'll be able to consider things like this.

how many artist are there at the moment? (the community artists group is the only one without a drop down menu of volunteers)

We currently have 17 , although at least three of those only work on specific projects, not illustrating the Edited Guide in the same way that the others do.

We are trying to find out how much work each artist can do, so that we can work out what other projects we can take on, but we think that at least 30 would be a good number to have.

this means that each artist should be doing about 2 pictures every month. With that amount i'd have thoght you'd be able to expand into group artwork, although that would depend on amount of artwork can be produced by each artist.

with the amount you are hoping for of 30, then each artist would only have about 1 picture to do per month, meaning there should definitely be able to expand into community groups.

i also remember talk at first of pictures being created for entries previously edited in the past. has anything happened about this, or not?

Now Spook, I love you dearly (not least because you have a lot of my pictures on your space) but you're in danger of suggesting that we're not working hard enough .

If you take out some artists for ill health, real life commitments, hardware problems, connectivity problems, holidays, exams etc we usually only have 5 or 6 standing by with a full set of sharpened wax crayons at their disposal. It's all we can do to meet the commitments you list plus .

The entrance test is slowly providing graphics for old EG entries.
