Entry: The French Republican Calendar - A815988
Author: Spiff (MP) - The Alt Writing Workshop - where *you* decide what goes into the UnderGuide! - U185155
Hi all you peers,
I saw the Napoleon entry in PR and it reminded me of my own attempts at entries on all kinds of stuff from the Revolutionary period.
This in particular seemed as if it would be handy to go into the EG to explain some of the odd dates associated with the little big man's career.
It's been adapted from a smaller entry that was to have been part of a Uni project (alas, never completed), so there may be some shortfalls in terms of explanation...
anyway, I'm sure you'll let me know!
fire away,
spiff

Nice one Spiff
I saw all your Uni project stuff when writing my Napoleon articles and was thinking of giving you a bit of a nudge on some of them.
Glad to see it wasn't needed

Hi there Orcus,
sorry I haven't been over to comment on your N pieces yet - I got reading them, and then thought, 'ooh, I'd better get that French Rev Cal thing together' and so... well, you see how it happened,
I'll be over there later, though... honest! ;-D

Hi Spiff!
Great article: very well explained!
I'm wondering if a brief note should be made of other subsequent revolutionary calendars - Cambodia created one in the seventies, I think.
Oh, and Catholic should have a capital C.
Superb stuff, and an excellent complement to Orcus' entries on Napoleon.

If you'd like a frivolous footnote, I found one in 'The Calendar' by David Ewing Duncan. Apparently, the British leapt gleefully at a chance to tease the French and renamed the Revolutionary months 'wheezy, sneezy, freezy, slippy, drippy, nippy and so forth'.
I like the entry as it stands, by the way...
Ivan.

hi all,
Frivolous footnote duly added, for that tip, I love it!
Catholicism correctly capitalised.
I've added some more info - a mention of the 'metric clock', and the naming of the 365 days of the year.
what else did I do? hmm... nope, think that was it.
I haven't included anything yet on other revolutionary calendars - don't know whether it needs it or not. Perhaps i'll see if I can find a link to a suitable site for 'further reading'...

Well, actually, I *did* have a Google today, for 'revolutionary calendars' - and didn't get any joy other than the Frog one.
There *are* various calendars, of course, but nothing that looks strictly a propos.
There's also an EG entry on the Mayan calendar and the 'Calendar AD', whatever that means. If I don't make an h2g2 link to it, no doubt the jobbing sub will (that *does* seem to be high on the subs list of priorities, sometimes to my consternation)...

Hi Spiff!
Somehow I remember this entry from long time ago, somewhere in the Writing Workshop. Ah yes, there we are. Glad to see it move on

Hi there Boss,
long time no, er... whatever this is!
yep, finally knocked this into a shape I thought might make the grade - doesn't seem to be inspiring much comment, but hey!
Whilst it's up the list, anyone got any thoughts as to whether it should really be refered to as the 'republican' or 'revolutionary' calendar?
Both get a lot of hits on google, but I'm not sure which is the 'proper' title.
I shall endeavour to find out...

As far as the title goes - I've usually seen the calendar referred to as 'Revolutionary' rather than 'Republican'. I'm not sure if there is an official designation. The fact is, when I saw the current title I knew what the entry would be about, so either label would fit the bill.
Ivan.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
