A Conversation for Talking Point: Homelessness
Yep, I was homeless for 3 months

Due to circs beyond my control I suddenly didn't have full access to my house. It was 7:30 pm and I needed to find somewhere for the night. I only had what I stood up in; a boiler suit, T shirt and sandals and a spare pair of track suit bottoms in a bin bag! Oh yep, petty cash of about £10 I guess but no cards etc.
It's at times like that when you find out who your friends are. I sofa surfed only for the one night and the same friend then paid for 3 nights in a hotel near my house. The hotel was £25 a night, so I was desparate to find somewhere cheap being also on sickness benefit only. My sister was next to useless! I could use her husband as a taxi service which was handy, but I had expected more.
Eventually I found a room for £40 a week and since I was the first and only occupant in the house, I had all the kitchen etc to myself. I managed to get hold of a few of my possessions from home, but couldn't return for a total of 3 months. The first part was much the worst, but I knew I would get back into my house eventually. I can well imagine not having that, or the help that I had from other friends as well as the one mentioned.
