KEYBOARD

Why use the keyboard when you have a perfectly good rodent sitting there? Well, if I were to put an image of a keyboard on your screen, would you prefer to write a document by pointing and clicking with your mouse? Of course not. The keyboard is much faster.

This doesn't only apply to typing text. Just hitting a single key or key pair is much quicker than hauling a mouse across the mat until the pointer is in just the right place, then clicking. While you're putting your hand on the mouse, you could be pressing the equivalent key(s), especially if you can touch type. Don't get me wrong, the mouse is ideally suited for some jobs: graphical applications and dragging things across the screen, for example. But for sheer productivity, the keyboard is often under used. With the addition of a few utilities, it can be enhanced in some ways that become intuitive after a few uses. The next section will discuss some of these.

In the meantime, go here for detailed coverage of the standard shortcuts: A663527

WINKEY is a very handy free utility that uses the 'Windows' key. I have four of them on my keyboard which seems somewhat excessive when all they do is invoke the start menu, which can be done from the keyboard by Ctrl+Esc anyway. It has some preset commands such as Winkey+UpArrow which maximises the current window. It can be programmed by the user to perform 200 functions as required. Great idea, and I've never had a problem with it apart from assuming that it's part of Windows and automatically trying to use it on other computers that don't have it. Showing the taskbar icon is optional, so you wouldn't know it's there until you try to use it.

OTHER UTILS

WIZMO is a utility you can download free from the GRC.com site (worth studying in its own right).

It's really a multi-purpose utility with no front end! Invoke it without parameters and all you get is the instructions on how to use it. But you can invoke it with various parameters to do an awful lot of handy things. This should come most easily to old DOSsers like me :). Like all Steve Gibson's work it's tiny! A real Swiss army knife of a utility; I have it set up to close down my system with all running programs. On that instance of it I have a 'STOP' icon instead of the standard Wizmo one, but you can have as many instances as you like with different parameters and icons to suit the chosen function of Wizmo.
