Abi's Community Column

Welcome to my first Community Column in quite a while. I took a few weeks break while the h2g2 Summer party took place and what a party it was! Thanks to everyone who came and made the day such a success, the Editorial team had a great time and we hope you did too. Then to cap it all, I was ill last Wednesday and unable to send Shazz my copy in time. But I did get to see the inside of my local GP Practice!

First up, many congratulations to P.U.D.D.I.N.G. who have reached the fifty member mark! For those of you not in the know, the name stands for People United in Defence of Depression, Irritability and Natural Grumpiness. Don't be afraid to face the world with a frown! Can you imagine what it would be like if we all walked around grinning like like Breakfast television presenters! Arghhh! So if you are an Eeyore rather the a Tigger - pop over to P.U.D.D.I.N.G. where they will be celebrating in a very grumpy way.

As you will have noticed there have been many changes over the last few weeks, most notably the launch of the Hub. The Hub is a DNA site that is dedicated to exactly what powers it. The Hub, which is run by the DNA team of Peta, Jim and Mark, contains lots of information about the DNA project, from community theory to technical specifications. It's where you can find out about DNA development, and can contribute to the future of the project. Why not pop in and say hello?

I always try to click on the Infinite Improbability Drive at least once a day. This week the laws of chance have thrown up a music theme. I have learnt about the Socialist singer songwriter Billy Bragg and learnt the story behind the animated band Gorillaz. Having spent the weekend in deepest rural Britain, I was thrilled to come back and learn all about Blackfaced Sheep. We saw a lot of them - I only wish I had read the article prior to the Wedding then I could have told everyone the sum of my knowledge at the Reception. Unfortunately we weren't in Derbyshire so I wasn't able to look out for any of the famous Derbyshire Wallabies.

In total, we spent a total of 17 hours in the car. I really wish I had discovered the recipe for Super Creamy Butter Toffee prior to setting out as there were times when I really doubted we would ever find somewhere to eat! Still I am now very familiar with the motorway interchanges around Birmingham, thanks to having to drive them four times. Perhaps I will write a entry on it.

Meanwhile back in the office, the entry on What it was like in the 1980s drew a stunning response. So good, that Jimster stayed very, very late1 in the office turning your memories into a cracking entry. It all served to remind me just how terrible the 80s were - though no doubt nostalgia will soften the horrendous memories of what we wore, watched and listened to. Meanwhile we are all try to think of poems and limericks in honour of Mark Moxon.

Any way peeps! I am off home to make Purple Mashed Potato.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
