This piece is wonderful, ~jwf~!
Back in the day when I played those infernal timewasters (Quake was my game of choice) I used to try to whip through each level as quickly as possible, damn the torpedoes, etc. and then later, in another life, go back and clear out every monster and find every secret. I got to be pretty good at it by the end. At least, I think it was 'I'.
Actually, there's a distinct parallel, I think, in the process you describe and the real world *fact* of biological evolution by natural selection. In the cyber world, there are a great many successive generations of avatar, each of which inherits a bit of survivability information from the previous generations. Eventually, an avatar evolves which is well adapted to surviving in this cyber world.
But what is missing?
Sex, of course! You mention orgasm, but the only reproduction in this world you describe is through death, and there is no mating.
A fine piece of writing, ~jwf~
