Pocket-Knives
Created | Updated Jan 31, 2011
A pocket-knife, sometimes called a penknife, is a small, usually fold-able, knife kept in one's pocket. Pocket-knives can be one of the most handy things to keep on one's person, and can make difficult situations much simpler.
Types of Pocket-knives
The most convenient type of pocket-knife is the multi-tool, popularized by the companies Victorinox and Wenger, the manufacturers of the Swiss-army knife. This type of pocket-knife can be carried anywhere because it is considered a tool, not a weapon, therefore it is not a concealed weapon. Common tools on a multi-tool pocket-knife are: a knife blade, a saw, a small scissors, a can/bottle opener, a cork-remover, fingernail scraper, Phillips screwdriver, and fish de-scaler. Some include tweezers, toothpicks, mini-LED torches, and even USB storage devices.
A less world-widely popular type of pocket-knife is the simple pocket-knife. It may be just one or two knife blades that fold into the handle, and is a more popular knife in the back-country areas of the United States.
Legal...Stuff.
There are laws set in place in some areas restricting the carry and use of pocket-knives. For example, in many areas switch-blade knives and swing-blade knives are illegal to possess and carry. Also, in some areas there is a length limit that determines whether the pocket-knife is a tool or a weapon (i.e., 24cm and shorter, you can carry it in your pocket, longer than that and you're a criminal).
A Final Word
Pocket-knives are extremely useful, easy to maintain, relatively cheap, and a brilliant tool for any prepared person to carry.
